The story, Under a Tropical Sun by Pasky Pascual, moves like a mystery novel, the settings are beautifully painted, the characters are rich and complex, the themes are clearly for adults who comprehend the complexity of the world and enjoy struggling with that complexity.The novel weaves together, in an important historical context of post WW II Philippines, an exotic tropical location, a fast paced mystery, and a moving emotional narrative demonstrating multi-level impacts of choices, actions, biases and natural consequences that unfold out of individuals and their personal motivations, experiences and histories.
Dr Pascual's prose is very well developed, the speed with which it flows suits the mood of the setting and the context of his characters. His descriptions of the tropical environments filled my nostrils with delicious smells, my inner vision with vivid color, and my skin to a feeling of the hot sticky air outside and the cool, fanned interiors.
I appreciated the historical perspective and the commentary that is implied from the narrative on the role of a superpower and the representatives of that power in country. The almost simple presentation of the profound impacts that such unequal power has at multiple levels in a society, and indeed around the world, were tactfully made without moral lecturing...leaving it to the reader to sort out his or her own opinion of the facts of the matter as uncovered in the pursuit of the mystery toward truths, I as a reader, were keen to discover.
The novel is clearly a first novel and has some structural awkwardness, however the book is well built overall. Although I struggle with the choice of placement of the ending material, I defer to the obviously good judgement of the writer and his editors in the final selection.
Overall a very good book that I highly recommend. Although I read it this past winter (2013) when it first came out, I found myself thinking more than once that this would be a perfect read for the beach or a vacation. I will take it with me on my iPad and reread it this summer. I encourage anyone who has read this far to do the same, I don't think you will regret it.

Pasky Pascual's first novel is richly textured with the images, smells, and sounds of post-World War 2 Philippines. History buffs and mystery junkies alike will enjoy the small details that bring the scenes to life, so that you feel the dilemmas of the CIA analyst, as he pursues the capture of a Filipino rebel.
Anyone whose journey started from humble beginnings to places of unexpected consequence will relate to this tale of unlikely heroes. While the personal stories pulled me in right away, I sensed a deja vu around what happens when America tries to "democratize" a country ... the good and the bad.
It left me with one question ... Is there a sequel to look forward to?
I just finished the version. Excellent read! I grew up in the US but was born in Subic Bay when it was a US Naval Base. The story's location, history, and people engaged all my attention. Also read The Yellow Bar a month ago. Have been reading anything I can find on the Philippines during WWII, nonfiction or fiction. I welcome any recommendations. Thank you!
Knowing that I'm a former seminarian who lost his faith about the same time I gained a Filipina goddaughter, a close friend made a gift to me of this debut novel by a government lawyer/scientist who grew up in the Philippines.
I'm skittish of first novels by untested writers and prefer to get in on the game after an author has become well reviewed and established. I'm glad I made an exception in this case.
Under a Tropical Sun is a terrific read. The author knows how to let his narrative and its characters unfold by showing rather than telling. He also reveals how the brutalization of a nation can elevate and degrade the souls of its citizens, as happened in the Philippines, without pushing the point. I absorbed quite a bit of the pre- and post-World War II history of that country as the tale developed without ever feeling lectured.
This is the story of two former seminarians who shared a mentor priest before their lives diverged at the outbreak of war. The event that brought them back together, the decapitation of three American servicemen on a deserted beach, makes for an engrossing, page-turning read.
The characters are tersely and vividly sketched. I grew to care about or despise them in short order, and the book sustained my interest in their lives from beginning to end. My sympathies shifted as the tale moved forward. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen and why what had happened did happen. I didn't anticipate the disturbing truth that lies at the heart of this story. Its revelation was as surprising as it was perfect.
The friend who gave me this book must have realized that its deep spirituality would remind me why I once found the transcendental temptation so seductive. The tale is haunted by a tragic sensibility that feels resolved yet unredeemed at the end, exactly as an agnostic like myself would expect matters to be left in a godless world. I strongly suspect a believer might come to precisely the opposite conclusion, which makes for universal appeal.
It's a tribute to my regard for this novel that I bought a version for myself after passing on my paperback gift copy to another friend. I plan to re-read it in a year or so to see if or how my response has evolved. It's that kind of book.
